Alternative Instagram Influencers Worth Following in 2026

Let’s face the facts for a minute. It might seem like just the same five people, same five outfits, same “get ready with me” voiceover, in the same beige apartment in mainstream Instagram in 2026. This is a clean girl, bunned up slicked, is everyone dressed the same way? If you’ve ever been scrolling and thought, “where’s the personality in all of this?,” you’re not the only one and you’re not wrong either. That is exactly why the alternative Instagram influencers are the real ‘pulse’ on Instagram this year. They’re the ones bringing Instagram back to being a place and not a mood board factory. Whether it’s that you don’t fit into a cute little box like everyone else, you’ve got black nails, band tees, a tweed blazer, buzz cuts or anything that embodies “different,” this list is essentially a love letter to you.

The Rise of Alternative Aesthetics on Instagram in 2026

Gen Z got tired. Realistically, collectively fed up with the algorithm dictating that everybody look the same. Rather than complain, they constructed aesthetics out of rebellion. Soft goth, dark academia, cottagecore, with a shadow thrown over it, emo revival, punk throwbacks, tomboy, queer fashion that refuses to pick a lane. These are not only filters or a ‘vibe’, but full identities people have created when the ‘mainstream’ mould just didn’t fit them. But they didn’t make the room smaller to fit it in; they made the room bigger. That’s the true Instagram 2026, and here’s some of the people driving it.

Soft Goth and Dark Romance

Samantha Lubrano

Samantha is based in New York and she’s simply what occurs whenever goth meets softness meets “I will certainly argue you about going vegan. Her style is lace, dark florals, nuanced lighting, and an attitude that’s perfectly unapologetic, and makes you want to buy black lipstick right now. What makes her different is not only her appearance, but also the way she lives her life: edgy. The difference between costume and personality.

itsjinxiebutt

Want to know that goth doesn’t equal boring, itsjinxiebutt is proof. Experience in fashion design, costume making, and a very cool and very wearable wardrobe. She isn’t as big on this list but really deserves so much more attention, particularly if you’re a DIY fan, chains, fishnets, or anything that actually looks like the effort was put into that outfit rather than a single order from Shein.

Dark Academia Dreamers

Jordan (@hellomissjordan)

‘I read a lot of old books and I’m sad about it in a pretty way’ is Jordan’s take on a visual language. She wears tweed, has a turtleneck, references literature and has a dreamy romantic filter on everything she posts. Her content is effective because it isn’t cosplay, it’s someone who is passionate about the aesthetic of intellectual melancholy and not afraid to make a life out of it. Dark academia has the potential to fall out of fashion as a 2021 Pinterest trend, but creators such as these continued to evolve the movement instead of making it static.

Dark Cottagecore and Goblincore

Hollowfae

Real name Sunday, and one of the most underrated creators on this whole list. But Hollowfae took the cottagecore aesthetic, which had been becoming a bit too pretty and pastel and Instagram, and brought it to the woods where it belongs. Moss, mushrooms, bones, moody forest light, an authentic goblincore meets fairycore world, lived in, not staged. Who would ever want to eat their feed like a candle ad, but she does.

Punk, Grunge and Emo Revival

Luanna

One of the OG punk-grunge fashion bloggers, born in Peru, based in New York and has indeed stayed in the game and come in for the ride. Red hair, combat boots, flannel, band tees and the easy, genderless fusion that always had been the signature of grunge. She’s proof that this isn’t just a fad, this is a lifestyle that is reinventing itself, a punk revival and emo revival, in essence. The 2000s are here again but more boisterous, more disheveled and more self-assured than ever.

Tomboy Energy

Christina Caradona

For years, the tomboy look has been allChristina’s own and she still rocks it more than most of the newer accounts that are trying to do it. Over sized blazers, sneakers, a male-chic vibe that’s never “quirky” for the algorithm’s sake. She is a mix of comfort and confidence and people keep returning to her feed because it’s not a forced outfit idea.

Queer and Gender-Nonconforming Icons We Live For

This is something that we’re not too picky about here at itismandystyle, as the queer and tomboy alternative creators are doing some of the most exciting, border-breaking fashion work on the entire platform right now.

Alok Vaid-Menon

Alok has been breaking the taboo of clothes having a gender for a long time now, and they have a fashion that is bold, colourful and unabashed by opinion of anyone. Sequins, pattern clashing, and gender fluid silhouettes in full effect. After Alok, it’s a dress rehearsal in putting on the clothes that you feel like wearing rather than what you are supposed to wear.

Andreja Pejic

One of the original open transgender supermodels, and a powerful and important woman’s voice in androgyn fashion. She alternates high fashion campaigns with more mundane, personal posts, and this makes her feel more like a human than an untouchable. She is a pioneer in embracing the androgyn look years before it made the mainstream dictionaries and was fully embraced in the fashion world and she is doing it like a breeze.

Why itismandystyle Gets It

I’m not making this up! This whole trend of alternative Instagram influencers is due to the fact that for many years, many people felt like fashion wasn’t for them. That’s the whole point of that itismandystyle exists for anyway. This blog is dedicated to the ladies who never really fit the “mainstream fashion mould”, the band tee loving ladies, the tomboy ladies, the ladies who didn’t want to feel like they were the “tailored” lady, who didn’t want to feel like they were the “algorithm” lady.

If this year you feel like you are a little more seen from alternative Instagram influencers, that is a good thing! That’s the idea. It’s not homework, it’s fashion, and these guys, big and small, are showing that “different” isn’t something to be fixed.
