Is Fashion Nova Like Shein? Here’s What You Actually Need to Know

First of all, let’s be honest with ourselves for one minute. If you ever wasted around twenty minutes going from one website to another at three in the morning, looking at your online cart asking yourself if you want to buy a $12 dress from one company or a $35 dress from a different company, we have been there and can relate to your internal debate of Fashion Nova vs Shein. They are both part of this vortex of online fashion! For example, you probably saw videos or posts on TikTok of some form of “outfits for under $50” where either of those names had shown up in the video. You went on to look at the same post and saw comments from people asking where the person purchased their clothing; and both Fashion Nova and Shein were in those posts as well. Are they both the same? Do we put them together because they are both affordable, and they are both fast fashion?

Come to think about it, there is much more to the similarities and differences between them than what appears on the surface. And, with 2026 being the year that fast fashion is strongly being criticized now more than ever before, it may be helpful to know what exactly you are spending your money on!

They’re Both Fast Fashion, But Make It Make Sense

If you are in the fast fashion universe, Fashion Nova and Shein are definitely part of the same fast fashion universe. They are both dropping new clothing styles daily, have inexpensive selling prices, and have created empires based on the idea that you can look cute at an affordable price. However, they are not the same brand, have different types of cultures, and are both completely different than the other in how their business models operate.

Shein is a Chinese-based global retailer that was established in 2008. They have collected an extensive amount of research data and used it to create an ultra-fast fashion mega-brand. Think of it this way — they introduce thousands of new items/products to consumers every week, and their prices would make you second guess the forces of economics. Shein has a worldwide reach with an extensive product catalog ranging from swimwear to other home products.Founded in the United States in 2006, Fashion Nova has built an entire brand around a very specific style of clothing. The one thing that they have in common is that their clothing is bold, fitted to the body, ready to be photographed for Instagram, and made with curves in mind. Their jeans can also be found at many different stores and are known to have a huge following among customers (no small feat in the fast fashion industry!).

The Price Difference Is Actually Real

When it comes to price, Shein wins with no question. You can honestly buy a dress on Shein for less than you spend on coffee before you go to work. The price of a similar dress on Fashion Nova is usually around $30-$50. On the other hand, Fashion Nova’s slightly higher prices can generally indicate better production quality compared to Shein; their stretch fabrics will usually last longer and fit better at the right place than similar items from Shein. Many celebrities including Cardi B and Kylie Jenner wear pieces from Fashion Nova, although this is not always an indicator of quality; however, it was no surprise to anyone that Fashion Nova was the most searched fashion brand on Google in 2018. They have a celebrity-driven marketing machine – one that Shein duplicates with their enormous quantity of items at unbelievably low prices!

The Aesthetic Is Completely Different

This is where people often misread the companies. Shein blows its load on ALL kinds of clothing styles! You will find almost Every Style Under The Sun – cottagecore, Y2K, minimalist, oversized streetwear, and more – within their Catalog that consistently gets updated as new trends create demand for new designs. Fashion Nova, on the other hand, has developed an identity that is much narrower and more defined; there clothes support curves, are confident & stylish and can be worn out, or similar to clubs, to show off your body! The audience of Fashion Nova already knows what type of clothing item they are looking for – something to wear going out or that accommodates a curvier shape with full hips, or a pair of jeans that fit perfectly and do not gap at the back when standing.Cardi B and others have collaborated with Fashion Nova for a while because they represent a certain type of unapologetic femininity.

Who Is It Actually For?

If you’re looking for one trendy outfit and your budget is restricted, Shein is the obvious answer. If you’re trying to create multiple outfits that use different items within the same style, and you want to wear those items more than once, Fashion Nova generally does a better job, especially in the areas of denim, bodysuits, and clubbing dresses. Neither Fashion Nova nor Shein is made for someone who wants to invest long-term. Both companies are fast fashion companies with pricing to match.

The Tea Nobody Really Wants to Drink

We’re honest about what we say on this platform, but both of these brands have serious issues beyond just sizing inconsistency.

Shein has been embroiled in multiple controversies due to ethical issues. According to a 2024 report on the state of ethical fashion, Shein received a score of 20 out of 100 (the average score for brands in the same sector is 31) for its worker welfare practices as well as being investigated for paying its workers in factories supplying Shein in the Guangzhou region of China less than one dollar per item, while working 75 hours or more per week and being compensated on a per-unit basis. In the fast-fashion industry, Shein and Fashion Nova have gained popularity because of their rapidly changing designs at low prices. But both companies have been accused of unethical labor practices. The BBC investigated Shein’s factories and found that they employ women who have been trafficked into the U.S., most often from China or other developing nations, to manufacture low-cost clothing.

An investigation in January 2024 by the South Korean government uncovered that several Shein clothes sold in South Korea contained hazardous amounts of chemicals (for instance, phthalates). When U.K. lawmakers asked Shein representatives whether they source cotton from China’s Xinjiang province, where there are widespread allegations of forced labor, the representatives avoided the question and responded with, “We cannot comment on that right now.”

Fashion Nova has also faced many legal problems regarding the manner in which they manufacture clothing and their interaction with employees. From 2016 till 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor found that many workers in Los Angeles who made clothing for Fashion Nova were paid an illegal wage of $2.77/hour, which is an extremely low-wage that is unlikely to persuade employees to protest against their wages.

Fashion Nova responded to the U.S. Department of Labor investigation stating that they are not liable for how their vendors manage payroll. Also, in 2022, Fashion Nova was determined to have suppressed more than 100,000 negative reviews in order to maintain an artificially high rating due to a 2016 settlement with the FTC of $4.2 million. More recently, Fashion Nova has settled with the FTC for another $9.3 million because they did not notify their customers that there would be delays in shipping their products.

So What Do We Do With All This?

This conversation does not intend to shame anyone for their purchases of low-cost clothing. Instead, the purpose of this discussion in 2026 is to create an informed society. Now you know the origin of the $14 dress and who made it. This is not just a luxury of people who can afford it but this means your ability to make a thoughtful purchase as a conscious customer. You cannot be perfect just like another person cannot be, and no one is perfect; however, you can make choices based on your record so that even small purchases make sense when they are added to the total of what you would buy anyway.

The Real Answer

While both Shein and Fashion Nova are fast fashion, founded on consumers using social media and unethical production, their product focus and how they measure pricing, aesthetics and quality from their companies, all differ from each other.

Fashion Nova is a fashion retailer based in the U.S. and uses a curvy, celebrity-driven concept for a limited product line; however, Shein is one of the largest ultra-fast fashion manufacturers in the world and uses algorithms to create products that are low-cost and delivered to consumers’ homes at an unprecedented volume or rate.

As the fast-fashion industry begins to face stricter regulations imposed by the European and North American governments and a Gen Z shopper who wants to know about the individuals who manufacture each fashion item in the price range they can afford, both Fashion Nova and Shein will need to make changes to their business or suffer additional consequences from consumers in the near future. Shein needs to make many changes as several countries have taken steps to limit how Shein can ship products into the U.S. without having to pay duties, and Fashion Nova needs to prove they are committed to those who manufacture their clothing.

This is a significant moment in history, and it is time for each of you to Step-Up and play your part as a shopper, as it pertains to the amount you have available in your bank account and how to positively impact the future world we live in.
