Okay, confession time. 50% of the people who ask me about skincare are NOT my girls. My brother, Room mate’s bff, and you masc friends who solicit my moisturizer and then snort snarky faces when the face doesn’t feel like sandpaper anymore. So this one is for them and for those who wish to have a routine that doesn’t involve a 12-step ritual. I’m not a paid advocate for any of these products, and I’ve tried more than enough skin care products for men 2027 to have any opinions about them at all.
Is “Men’s Skincare” Actually a Different Thing?
Mostly? No. Skin is skin. You didn’t test the various aisles of a product to see if your face came from one before deciding to break out.
However, there are some important differences. The skin can get thicker and oilier, the pores will enlarge and the oil glands become more active because of testosterone. But when you shave, your face suffers from friction every day, tiny cuts, ingrown hairs and irritation—factors that most people don’t experience.
The rest is marketing. Many of the products marketed for men are simply the same formula in a grey bottle and have a fragrance that’s labeled something like Glacier Storm. Sometimes that’s fine. Sometimes it’s more lipstick and alcohol than your skin wants.
My personal guideline is to buy according to the skin type and ingredients, not the gender. Some of the items listed below are sold for men, many aren’t and all of them are for any face.
The Absolute Basics: Cleanser, Moisturizer, SPF
If you only do these 3 do them. Come on, that’s 90% of good skin!
A cleanse that removes sunscreen, oil, sweat, and other city particles while not drying the face. Bar soap isn’t a cleaner. I will not turn back, I will not depart from this hill.
A moisturizer helps to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Even if you have oily skin you still need one, as dry skin can produce more oil to make up for it.
The genuine anti-aging product is SPF. Most of the wrinkles, dark spots and leathery aging skin attributed to old age are caused by sun damage. Wear it every day, including winter and even on cloudy days.
Best Cleansers for Men in 2027
For Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
I always go to CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser as my first choice for every friend I know who has oily skin. It penetrates and clears oily skin, is rich in niacinamide and ceramides and doesn’t leave you with that tight, squeaky feeling you get if you overdo it.
For frequent acne, the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser contains salicylic acid that removes any impurities from the pores. It may dry out quickly and should be used once a day as a start.
For Dry or Sensitive Skin
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is creamy, odorless and so gentle you’d almost like to do nothing with it. Boring is good. If you react to just about anything, Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser is another excellent choice because it doesn’t include the irritating ingredients.
For Normal or Combination Skin
The safe middle ground is La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser. It cleans effectively, feels soft after use and mixes well with other skin products that you use.
Best Moisturizers for Men in 2027
The most common problem I get reported from guys is “greasy moisturizer. Fair. All of these picks are light and quick.
Lightweight Gel Moisturizers
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel glides on to the skin. It’s oily or combo skin friendly, drug-store priced and hyaluronic acid based, it’s perfect in the hot weather.
The slightly upgraded version is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream. It is matte, cool and ideal for people who tend to perspire heavily or for those who live in a humid environment.
For Dry or Post-Shave Skin
The only men’s product that I really recommend is Clinique For Men Maximum Hydrator. It absorbs fast, calms an itchy shave and does not have a commercial body spray odor.
This is technically for night time use, but many people use CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion throughout the day. Light, ceramides, niacinamide, no shine.
Best SPF for Men in 2027 (No White Cast, Promise)
This is where most men quit using sunscreen altogether because a sunscreen they had tried in 2014 was so thick and chalky. There were lots of changes.
Clear and Invisible Options
Clear, almost silky, and perfect for use as a primer, Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 is completely clear. There is no white cast on any skin tone which is important.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Fluid SPF 60 comes out thin as water. It can be absorbed by skin and absorbs sweat well, making it a good choice for gym day.
Hydrating Sunscreens
The internet’s favorite for a reason: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics. It’s like a light moisturizer but it doesn’t oily, it has a little bit of a shine and it’s cheap enough to use generously.
For Sensitive or Acne-Prone Skin
EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 is a dermatologist’s favorite formula for acne-prone and redness-prone skin. I must say, it does have zinc oxide, but if you don’t rub it in well, it can leave a slight hue on deeper skin tones. If you’re this type of person, then the Supergoop or La Roche-Posay options are better choices.
Best Targeted Treatments
When the basics are in place, make one treatment for the primary concern. One. Not five. Your face isn’t a science fair.
Acne
Differin Gel contains an over-the-counter retinoid called adapalene which actually prevents breakouts, rather than just drying them out. Apply a speckle size at night, and one will experience some peeling during the first couple weeks. It’s worth it.
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is ideal for treating blackheads and clogged pores. Begin 2-3 nights a week.
Oily Skin and Big Pores
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is a facial paste that contains Niacinamide and Zinc to help regulate oil production and smoothen the appearance of the pores. It is inexpensive, effective and will readily absorb into moisturizer.
Dark Spots and Uneven Tone
Topicals Faded Serum is formulated to treat dark marks and post-acne spots, particularly when it comes to melanin-rich skin where hyper pigmentation has a tendency to last longer. The Inkey List Tranexamic Acid Serum can perform a similar task and is more affordable.
Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs
The two classics are Bump Patrol Aftershave Formula and Tend Skin. Both contain exfoliating acids to prevent hairs from rebounding into the skin. Also, shave with the hair growth, use a clean blade and don’t shave your face as if you owe it money.
Budget vs Mid-Range vs Splurge
Budget
You can create a great health regimen for less than the cost of a single take-out meal. Almost anyone is covered by CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun and The Ordinary Niacinamide. There is no low cost feel to this setup.
Mid-Range
Try it up a notch with products like La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, Clinique For Men Maximum Hydrator, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Fluid and Paula’s Choice 2% BHA. Improved textures, a little more refinement, still very fair.
Splurge
The “my skin is my personality now” bunch is made up of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, EltaMD UV Clear, and Topicals Faded. Do they offer a better value than budget options? Sometimes slightly. The majority of the time it’s all about the texture and vibes, and let’s face it, vibes are important.
Ingredients to Look For (and Avoid)
The Good Stuff
Niacinamide is a soothing agent that helps to regulate oil production. Your skin barrier is repaired by ceramides. Water is drawn into the skin by HA without weightiness. Salicylic acid gets rid of pores. Retinoids, such as adapalene, are the most effective treatment for acne and long-term texture. Only modern chemical filters and zinc oxide provide real sun protection.
The Stuff to Skip
Lots of drying alcohol, which can be found in many “cooling” aftershaves and toners. Strong scents, particularly those that are sensitive or prone to acne. Abrasion from rough physical scrubs with sharp fragments, leading to minute tears. And menthol, which is cool but irritation in a cool hat.
As far as the men’s skin care products 2027, the mundane, perfume-free versions are going to be better than the ones that perfume.
A Simple 3-Step Routine
Morning
Step one: Wash with your cleanser or simply rinse with water if your skin is dry. Apply a light moisturizer, such as Hydro Boost or Clinique Maximum Hydrator, in step two. Step three: Apply sunscreen – 2 finger lengths on the face and neck. Completed within 3 minutes.
Evening
Step one is to cleanse well and remove the sunscreen and dirt from the day. Step two involves applying your one treatment, be it Differin, BHA, niacinamide or Faded. Step three: Moisturize to seal it in. Alternate nights the use of adapalene and BHA.
Wait at least 6 weeks before passing a new routine. Skin is slow. This is a secret that no one is selling and that is patience.
Final Thoughts From Mandy
Self-care is not frivolous, frilly or unnecessary, girly. Just brushing your teeth, or washing your hoodie every once in awhile – please. Regardless of your body shape and size, you have a right to feel good in your face.
So let’s get a cleanser, moisturizer, and an SPF and let’s begin there. There’s no single best men’s skin care product out there that’s the most expensive or hyped. These are the ones that you will use every day.
If you are still taking my moisturizer after reading this, I’ll be mailing you the receipt. Love you, though. Go glow. As a testament to that, I wasn’t lying about any of the best skincare products for men 2027 in this list. I’ve tried them, my friends tried them and after trying them, they’re in!
