Gen Z Likes New Balance Sneakers , Which Ones?

Let’s be honest , somewhere between 2020 and right now, New Balance sneakers quietly took over the world. Rather than go out on the public stage with a bombastic publicity blitz, or have a famous rapper turn their brand into a logo with a Tweet, New Balance has moved more methodically; as if they were creating an “elastic” account with a certain identity and waiting for others to happen upon them naturally. And for Gen Z – they have arrived quickly.

By 2025, New Balance’s worldwide sales reached $9.2 billion, representing an overall 19% increase from the previous year; and Europe – alone – experienced a 30% increase over the previous year. Numbers like this don’t come quietly. They are celebrating their success/at the height of their success (e.g., New Balance celebrated on off-the-field victories) and the majority of people who are responsible for that success are exactly who you would expect.

So which New Balance shoes are Gen Z actually wearing/purchasing/standing in line for? Let’s take a look.

The One That Started the Obsession

New Balance 550

For the past three years, TikTok and Instagram have shown the 550 at least once or twice. Originally released in 1989 as a basketball shoe, it fell off the market for decades before swiftly re-entering. The clean cut leather upper, low profile, and discreet “N” on the side scream prep school dropout energy and there are quite a few who appreciate that look.

The 550 and its resurgence can largely be attributed to Hailey Bieber wearing them, Aime Leon Dore becoming popular in collaboration with them at the launch of their new line, and overall, the 550s being the classic sneaker that made it clear they want the look of “I don’t give a f*** but I care” (the words of a friend). It’s one of those New Balance sneakers that You’ll find this product is compatible with just about anything: Break it down – Wide trousers are good with mini skirts, jeans, etc.

In 2026 they continue to be popular. New colours keep getting released which means there’s more of them available and being sold every year. What are you doing if you don’t own one?

The Chunky One That Refuses to Apologise

New Balance 9060

The 9060 makes a statement unlike any other. Oversized midsole, wavy panels, and an imposing presence make it impossible for this shoe not to command attention. Also inspired by the 99X series, it takes the original design, cranks up the volume several notches, and reimagines it as a full fashion statement. The 9060 is the shoe you wear to let the shoe speak for you.

Presence rather than performance is the emphasis with this shoe, which suits Gen Z’s apparent distaste for blending in. The model has been the most sought after sneaker by New Balance for the year 2024, and is well-positioned to maintain that momentum into 2026 thanks to continued introductions of new colours/interior designs and limited collaborations.

The 9060 represents the equivalent to wearing a statement coat with a flavourless base outfit. A simple base outfit pairs perfectly with this shoe and allows it to pick up the slack for the lack of colour or style of all other items worn with it.

The Heritage Icon Everyone Claims as Their Own

New Balance 990

Introduced in 1982, the New Balance 990’s is loved by many celebrities such as Steve Jobs, Timothée Chalamet and Kaia Gerber – thus making it extremely easy to understand why the shoe has become so popular with the Gen Z demographic.

What makes this shoe work? The 990’s do not appear to be “trendy” or “fashionable,” instead they share an extensive (yet organic) history of having a large number of celebrity wearers as well as the same materials (real suede/mesh) for the upper, a chunky but elegant shape and USA Manufacture on the tongue (this gives the product an “earned” feeling).

The 990v4 and 990v6 are continuing to generate interest from consumers thus making; it would not be surprising if the search volume for these two styles remains very high.

This is the New Balance sneaker for the person who wants to look like they’ve always had good taste. No loud logos, no hype, just a really, really good shoe.

The One Turning Heads in 2026

New Balance 1906R

Originally designed as a running shoe, the 1906R has become a leading lifestyle sneaker since the mid-2020s. The significant amount of collaborations produced by New Balance help to elevate its status; yet, as seen with regular releases, there are also compelling general releases.

With early collaborations in particular, such as JJJJound and thisisneverthat, there was much hype around the 1906R, which allowed it to become an important sneaker to consider; however, with or without these collaborations, the 1906R provides performance on both a technical and aesthetic level. The 1906R not only provides a functional and fashionable design in 2026, but it also much more than a “trend” due to its ongoing status as a contemporary staple in many people’s sneaker collections.

The 1906R provides a sweet combination between running shoes and dad shoes, providing Gen Z customers with the perfect footwear solution.

The Retro Underdog

New Balance 327

For sneaker heads, the 327 offers an eye-catching alternative to traditional athletic sneakers. With its huge retro-styled “N” logo, heritage-inspired silhouette, and curved design elements taken straight from the 1970s running catalog, it effortlessly bridges the gap between a throwback sneaker and what we would wear with our 2025 wardrobes.

Celeb fans of the 327 line include Dakota Fanning, Gigi Hadid, and Halsey. The style is also one of the most breathable styles in New Balance’s extensive lineup, which is especially important when you’re on your feet all day long. At $90, it provides a very accessible way for younger shoppers looking for a similar look but at much less than what you’d find in stores.

Search volume data indicates that this style peaked significantly in late 2025, and the same momentum carries into 2026 without any signs of slowing down. The 327 is not overly loud or showy, but rather has that right amount of subtle.

The One Just Getting Started

New Balance 2002R

The 990 is the original, while the 1906R is the new hotness. The 2002R has become the cult classic of the collection that continues to gain momentum as it evolves into a lifestyle piece. The shoe originally debuted back in 2010 as a high-performance runner, and many believe the resurgence of the shoe turned it into a full-fledged lifestyle staple due to the “Protection Pack” colorways (with their muted and earthy tones) that people were going crazy over.

The collar has a ton of extra padding and touches of craftsmanship with the suede and mesh upper and reflective detailing. The shoe offers plenty of details to those who take the time to look closely. The high-quality suede, breathable mesh, and ABZORB cushioning help make the shoe so comfortable and are reasons that fans appreciate how the shoe looks. It will still be one of the most highly anticipated shoes from New Balance at the start of 2026.

Why Is Gen Z So Obsessed, Though?

“People seem to overlook one very important point: Gen Z didn’t just “accidentally” find New Balance. They have made a conscious decision to wear New Balance as a rejection of the brands their parents have loved and also because New Balance shoes are very well designed shoes.

New Balance has transformed its “dad shoe” image into a highly desired fashion choice by Gen. Z through creative marketing, authentic product design, and a re-imaging of sneaker culture. This transformation has been accomplished by leaning into the rich heritage of the brand and not running away from it. This transformation has been accomplished by allowing the younger generation to discover New Balance shoes on their own, not by trying to suddenly make the brand appeal to them.

The New Balance chunky styles appeared at the exact moment that “maximalism” returned to fashion. The neutral colour schemes work perfectly with the entire “quiet luxury” and “tonal dressing” trends that have dominated all social media feeds. The collaborations that No Boundaries have produced with Aime Leon Dore, Miu Miu, Casablanca, and JJJJound have not only established the New Balance brand culturally but have done so without compromising the brand’s core identity.

The New Balance brand is continuously looking for ways to attract younger customers, stylistically and through marketing efforts to help create loyalty with both Gen Alpha and Gen Z while still appealing to the entire generational spectrum of customers. The cross-generational component is essential – it is rare to find an individual who is 22 and 45 years old that both want the same pair of shoes, and New Balance has mastered that.”

What’s Coming in 2026 and Beyond

New Balance has begun to grow steadily. They have already set the target to reach about 10 billion dollars in annual sales, and the rollout schedule for new products to be released through 2026 shows there won’t be a slowdown anytime soon. With cutting-edge footwear models like the ABZORB 2000 and 740 being seen as staples/universal items alongside the legacy products of established brands that have a long-standing history, the heyday of New Balance’s rise to prominence is near.

The recent debut of mismatch sneakers is an innovative solution to an age-old footwear dilemma; this innovative footwear solving an age-old issue occurs because of how New Balance has not only publicly committed to producing shoes in the U.S. and England but also how that continues to cement their desire to build a reputation in the premium footwear market.

The question is no longer “Do Gen Z find New Balance sneakers to be fashionable?”; it is now “Which sneakers do I purchase from New Balance?”.

My recommendation would be to begin with 550 sneakers if you want something simple and stylish, while 9060s provide an eye-catching punch and 990s represent durability. However, do not forget about 2002Rs because they have several more ground-breaking achievements to achieve in addition!

New Balance sneakers went from your dad’s running shoes to the most wanted kicks on the planet, and in 2026, they’re showing absolutely zero signs of stopping.
