Is Athleisure Still Trending in 2027, or Is It Finally Over?

Okay real talk. In trend years, it’s almost been a century since Athleisure took over the fashion world. So I’ve seen a lot of questions like that in my DMs and on my FYP lately, is athleisure still a trend or is it just old hat and started becoming the norm on how humans dress? But a legging is still a fashion statement when it’s worn by virtually everyone from your dentist to your dentist? That really is the question, and I don’t have a ditty-ditty answer for you. Let’s dig in.

A Quick Trip Down Athleisure Lane

If you haven’t gotten the memo in the past ten years, Athleisure means athletic wear, mixed with leisure wear. Very creative I know. It slowly spread through the mainstream in the mid-2010s, before bursting wide open when Lululemon found that customers were willing to pay ninety eight dollars for leggings that would make them feel like a Pilates girlie main character. Then there was Gymshark, the gym-influencer brand that made an empire out of squat-proof leggings and seamless outfits that made everybody look like they were jogging with a personal trainer on retainer.

Then 2020 happened. There’s no doubt that the pandemic did more to promote the athleisure trend than any marketing campaign ever could; with no one going anywhere, Zoom only revealed us from the waist up, and comfort had become a requirement to have as a personality trait. The sale of sweatpants was off the roof. Then the world opened back up and people just didn’t want to return to jeans that cut into their stomach. Athleisure went from being a loungewear to a uniform for all activities, from brunch to the airport, to work to when it really doesn’t have anything to do with a sport.

So Where Does Athleisure Actually Stand in 2027

The dirty little secret people don’t like to say aloud. Athleisure doesn’t exist anymore, but it’s not really a “conversation” like skinny jeans or Y2K low rise, either. It’s become the noise I’m used to, just a background to everyday wearing. Nobody goes on TikTok to post a video “OMG I’m wearing leggings today” because, that’s just Tuesday. Financially, it’s doing well, too, as the market is still huge and continues to grow; according to industry reports, the global athleisure space is expected to exceed six hundred billion dollars by the end of the decade. In terms of culture, though, it’s evolved from a sexy novelty into something everyone has and is expected to wear when they’re called upon.

If you’re asking the question, “Is athleisure still trending as in “is it still growing and relevant?”” the answer is yes, for sure. But if you’re wondering if it’s still youthful and exciting like it was during 2018, that question is far more complicated.

Athleisure Basically Had Babies

Actually, in 2027, “athleisure” isn’t dead; it’s had a number of very different kids, all of which have left home and had their own personalities.

Gorpcore Went Mainstream

Hiking and outdoor gear as fashion got started as a fringe culture for those who actually enjoyed camping and morphed into a street fashion trend. No one has ever walked the trail to the mountain, and now chunky trail shoes, technical shells and cargo anything are common wear for them, and brands such as Salomon and Hoka have pretty much become the style darlings of it all.

Sporty Chic Took the Elegant Route

But there’s also sporty chic, which is athleisure that took a trip to finishing school. Consider custom-designed track pants, high-rise knits, a baseball cap paired with a tailored coat, trainers in a slip dress. You don’t look like you just came back from spin class when you’re using it and, really, it’s probably the most trendsetting of all the branches.

Gym-to-Street Got Smarter

Gym-to-street used to be only about wearing your gym clothes to do shopping, and praying that no one ever noticed the sweat stains. In 2027, it’s far more deliberate: brands are creating pieces explicitly for the chance that the transition from a treadmill to a takeout order will not look like a spur-of-the-moment thing, but a put-together one.

Clean Girl Activewear Kept It Minimal

Clean girl activewear is the cousin of the group, the quiet luxury, the neutral toned, no logo one. Nothing yelling for attention, just very put-together and very sage “I have my life in order,” when you most certainly don’t.

What’s Actually Trying to Steal Athleisure’s Crown

Now, it gets spicy. Now, after all but a decade of leggings and hoodies being the standard, there is a definite and pronounced counter-movement and it’s being led by the tailoring industry. This year runways were all about the structure, the blazers, the wide leg trousers, the sharp waist lines, the “I look good in my clothes, I’ve got it together” vibe. More of an effort, it’s being touted as the return of the stylist, after all, “you’ve been in bed for years!

That doesn’t mean that tailoring is being replaced by athleisure entirely. More that the two are beginning to become indistinguishable, with fashionistas referring to it as workleisure, it’s like stretch trousers that fit for a boardroom but feel like joggers, or blazers with hidden stretch panels. It’s not so much a coup as it is a merger.

What the Big Brands Are Doing About It

Obviously, the brands are aware of all this. Lululemon has been upping the ante in that high, in-between, gym-to-boardroom space, with increasingly fabrics and cuts that perform more than just in the gym. Built on the concept of gym-bro and gym-girl fashion, Gymshark has been branching out into more mainstream fashion, away from the “fitness influencer” look. The wellness lifestyle approach has been a strong one with Alo, which is used not just for gym clothing, but as an entire lifestyle brand to adopt. The OG of sport style, Nike continues to play a role that’s both athletic and lifestyle, playing in both the gym and the street. In a nutshell, any major brand that anyone knows is keeping on selling 2019 leggings while everyone else has upgraded to a hybrid brand, should be answered carefully in that case, nobody wants to be the brand that is stuck with selling 2019 leggings and everyone else has switched to hybrid.

Celebrities Have Quietly Moved On Too

It may have been noticed by anyone who has followed a red carpet or paparazzi photos. The “airport look” for celebrities that was once oversized hoodie and leggings is slowly being swapped out for a more refined sculpted look, a turtleneck shaped coat and a more intentional “old money” aesthetic, with pencil skirts also featured in the mix. Celebrities have not lost their love for comfort, it’s simply a case of adapting it to make it more comfortable than spandex. Well even the Y2K sportswear nostalgia is in vogue and sporting tracksuits and low rise flares even these have become a moment.

My Honest Verdict

Then, what about the end of Athleisure? Absolutely not, just the numbers do. But will it remain a “trend” in the exciting “everyone’s talking about it” sense? Also no. Oh, so much so that the obvious answer to the question people keep throwing my way is: is athleisure still trendy? Probably not. It’s become the everyday reality of clothing these days. It really could be the best endorsement for athleisure. It became normal, it was too successful to be trendy. The truth of 2026 is not that athleisure is dead and gone, but that it’s simply changing up its look and trying to morph its image back into what it was, only now with a twist.
