Why Bella Hadid Is Not a Supermodel

Let’s talk about something the fashion world has been tiptoeing around for years. The word supermodel gets thrown around so loosely these days that it has honestly lost all meaning. And nowhere is that more obvious than when people call Bella Hadid a supermodel. Not just any model, but a real supermodel, like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford or Kate Moss. There has been a serious decline in the quality of models [standards] in both the modeling industry and the fashion business (in which they work), and it’s about time we talked about this…i.e., people who are not “supermodels” or “models” have fallen well below what used to be the standard.

The Title “Supermodel” Actually Means Something

Before we get into Bella specifically, let’s make one thing clear, the title of “supermodel” wasn’t handed out like participation trophies. A select group of women earned that title through hard work and by becoming household names without Instagram or any other network of nepotism to help them along. We’re talking about the “Big Six”, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, and Kate Moss; all women who didn’t simply walk down a runway, they helped to reshape our culture. Each one of them appeared on magazine covers for years, in commercial campaigns around the world, in music videos created by George Michael, or in unprecedented fashion advertisements. Each of these supermodels were the type of celebrities you wanted to be like because they were the type of celebrities who simply happened to model for a living rather than being models because they were already famous.

That is the standard. It is important to remember this standard.

So Where Does Bella Actually Stand?

This can get confusing, though, so let’s break it down. Bella Hadid is a very successful model with an impressive resume, including working on all 35 editions of Vogue around the world and winning the Model of the Year Award from the British Fashion Council in 2022. She also made the list of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for the year 2023. She is also reported to earn about 19 million dollars a year in her best years as a model. And, let’s not forget the 2022 Coperni spray dress moment, considered one of the most iconic fashion moments ever.

However, just because you have a successful career does not mean you are a supermodel in the classical sense. Bella Hadid is an internationally recognized supermodel who achieved her stardom in the age of social media, which is not how the traditional definition of a supermodel has been interpreted, and therefore creates a “muddy” reference point. Consequently, mixing the two types of supermodels together creates a disservice to both types of supermodels.

The Nepotism Conversation Nobody Wants to Have

Bella began modelling right after entering the industry with already established name recognition (her sister Gigi Hadid was a very well-known model). She had a mother who was also a successful model (Yolanda Hadid) and a father who is a successful businessman (Mohamed Hadid). By the time she turned 17 years old, she started with IMG Models and made her first appearance on the runway at New York Fashion Week in only days later. The doors opened for her are defined as open to others and took them years of hard work to find.

Does this remove her work ethic? Absolutely not. Does it make a conversation about her rise differently? Definitely. The great super models; Naomi Campbell was found on the streets of London at 15, Kate Moss was discovered at the airport at 14, built their empires from essentially nothing. It’s worthwhile to recognise the real contrast between Bella’s journey as a model today in comparison to the `original` models. This is a talk that we can have without taking Bella down as a human being.

The Plastic Surgery Question

This has been probably the most talked-about aspect of Bella’s career to date; and finally, in 2026, Bella has directly confirmed she had a nose job at age 14, and although she has said she has learned from this mistake, and wished to have kept the same nose as her ancestry. Experts have also pointed out that there have been significant changes in Bella’s facial shape, including her cheekbone structure, lip fullness and jawline; however, to a large extent, these resultant differences are due to face tapes, application of makeup, and natural changes to a person’s face as they grow older.

To clarify, getting any type of cosmetic surgery or surgery is not a crime, nor should it be something that one feels embarrassed about. However, the definition of a supermodel has always been a person who is naturally born with a face and body that can stop fashion designers in their tracks. Naomi Campbell was discovered when she was shopping. Kate Moss was discovered when she was at the airport. Both Naomi and Kate were born with their genetically unique look, and did not have the same opportunities to receive the same types of surgeries to change their “signature” look or images until well into their careers. When a large portion of your look is achieved through the use of cosmetic or surgical enhancements, especially those started when you are 14 due to pressure from the fashion industry, there are real implications regarding the definition of “natural” talent as it pertains to models.

The Pressure Behind the Procedure

It is sad that Bella Hadid’s story is based on the fact that she had plastic surgery, but that is not what makes her story tragic. Bella was 14 when she first had a nose job, but it was for more of a necessity than to enhance her beauty. Her supermodel status, therefore, has been produced by the fashion industry eating away this young girl’s body. It makes me wonder how real a supermodel is when she was built without regard for the conditions surrounding her picture.

Bella vs. The Greats, A Real Comparison

Bella Hadid may have a successful career today and be considered successful, famous and very connected, but she will never receive the recognition for her contributions to fashion history as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford and Gisele Bundchen have. All four women made significant strides in the modelling industry by breaking down barriers imposed by society at large in order to achieve success. In addition to being an inspirational figure to younger models, each one of them created an entirely new aesthetic or visual style through their modeling careers. In the following sections we will compare Bella’s influences with the four women mentioned.

What 2026 Is Actually Telling Us

Bella has stepped back from modeling, moved to Texas, is in a relationship with an equestrian, and has become selective in picking runway shows. Her peak cultural moment was in 2022 and now she is working to re-establish herself outside of the fashion world. This is a highly impressive feat but it still serves to show how short-lived celebrity status is, especially for someone like Bella Hadid who achieved her celebrity status based largely off of looks, connections, and not having anything that’s going to last over time.

All the original supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Kate Moss never just faded away to a ranch in Texas at 27 years of age and then destroyed one career for another; they became legends in their own right and are still considered fashion icons today long after they finished modeling. The first supermodels influenced the worlds of fashion and also brought together many different fashions and styles that crossed many generations and decades.

Bella’s influence has been only through social media, which started the whole celebrity culture. So, if the social media landscape changes, so will Bella’s influence on culture.

The Bottom Line

It’s not about hating Bella Hadid as an individual, she appears to have a solid sense of herself and desires to be known. It has been public knowledge that she has mental health issues, as well as Lyme’s disease and a misconception about early cosmetic work, and these are all good things for Gen Z to hear. We also do not consider Bella Hadid to be the villain in this story.

But when we compare hadid to original supermodels and call them supermodels, that is where we draw the line for this blog. The fashion world likes to recycle prestige in order to maintain relevance, and media outlets like a new face to give a legacy title too. The purpose of this blog is to keep it real with you as honesty is important here. Bella Hadid is famous, successful, and wealthy, which should say something about her talent. But a supermodel? Real supermodels created legacies that can’t be produced using money, relationships or surgery. There is a difference there, and it is important.
