Why Is Gen Z More Open Minded Than Other Generations

This generation has experienced first hand a life of destruction from fire in the world both natural and human-made. They have all witnessed firsthand how to handle their emotions by being compassionate towards others while also being less judgmental in return. Gen Z more open minded is not just a headline or a compliment thrown around on social media. The following evidence can be observed through a variety of ways, including their use of technology (ex: streaming services), their attendance at therapy sessions, etc. This generation grew up in a time period of uncertainty but also has found answers through the questions they ask as adults. This generation’s birthdate falls between 1997-2012.

And honestly? The world needed that.

They Grew Up With the Whole World in Their Hands

Being a digital native means experiencing the internet as your first means of accessing the world rather than just knowing how to use phones. Gen Z accessed information about diversities through TikTok at 2:00am, in comment sections and Discord servers, and by listening to playlists created by kids from Lagos, Seoul and Buenos Aires. The way that we have all experienced the world through the internet , many outside their countries and without geographic borders , has dramatically altered the way we view ourselves and the world around us. The more diverse our views become, and the more we experience the richness of diversity, the less fear we have associated with difference, as well as the more we begin to regard difference as other than a source of fear but instead as context. The ways in which Gen Z is able to culturally connect with people from all over the world via digital media allow them to share experiences, cultures and points of view in what feels like a natural way, rather than performing to an audience. For this reason, one could argue that Generation Z has received an education on a global level before leaving high school.

Identity Is Not a Box Anymore , It Is a Conversation

One of the most radical things Gen Z more open minded culture has done is change how people think about identity. Not as something that is stable and concluded, but rather as something changing and changing constantly, and that is very personal.

In the U.S. in 2026, roughly 20% of Generation Z adults identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community, which is much higher than the percentage of any of the older generations. Members of Generation Z view identity as something that is dynamic, intersectional, and visible, and they are also changing the way our society thinks about identity.

This number is not simply a number; it is a reflection of the fact that there is a generation of people who have found the language, the community, and the courage to tell others that they are more than the label that has been placed on them. Artists like Lil Nas X, Troye Sivan, Demi Lovato, and Sam Smith did not just “come out” as LGBTQ+; they created entire creative worlds around queerness and vulnerability, and they did not shy away from using those worlds to create a positive impact. Consequently, Generation Z has seen what these artists are doing and related to it and are following in their footsteps.

The “Cancel” Paradox

Here is the reality of what I’m saying: We’re not handing out trophies for participation here. Some sources have found that about 25% of Gen Z have high intolerance towards people with who have different ideologies and almost 50% stated “some people deserve to be cancelled.” That is the discussion nobody wants to have. Gen Z is incredibly progressive on topics of identity, sexual orientation and mental health, yet also displays an extreme degree of intolerance towards opposing views. They’re open-mined, but being open minded does not mean there will be no conflict. Being open-minded means being open to expanding your world view, which is a process not a fixed point in time. Gen Z is still evolving toward that end.

Mental Health Broke the Silence

One area in which Gen Z’s open-mindedness has really impacted society is mental health. In the past, previous generations have been encouraged to just ‘tough it out’, where they would push on without showing emotion, or talk about it with family or coworkers.

Gen Z is not on board.

Estimates suggest that members of Generation Z are 20% more open to discussing mental health issues than older generations, which has contributed to reducing the stigma around emotional health issues and increasing awareness and options for support. In fact, while members of Generation Z exhibit higher rates of anxiety and depression than younger and older generations combined, members of Generation Z are 37% more likely than older generations to seek professional help for addressing their mental health. Rather than being burdened by their struggles, members of Generation Z are naming their challenges and addressing them through therapy, and they are creating and sharing Instagram images related to attachment styles as a way to help others feel less isolated in their own experiences of mental illness.

This type of open-mindedness extends beyond political views, and demonstrates an individual’s willingness to experience both his/her own discomfort as well as the discomfort of others without necessarily trying to “fix it” or “make it go away.”.

Artists Who Modeled the Vulnerability

Olivia Rodrigo creates whole albums addressing issues of not being okay and heartbreak alone; Billie Eilish shares her experiences dealing with depression, body dysmorphia, and Tourette’s syndrome openly; Kendrick Lamar highlights how generational trauma manifests through music and how he approaches the subject of generational trauma on the track like it is the norm in music today. The artists referenced above are real examples of how widely successful artists generate large audiences by being diagnosed with truth. They are examples of truth being marketed to artists as a result of a generation being raised with no other option than exposing oneself.

The World They Inherited Made Openness Necessary

It’s possible that the open-mindedness of Gen Z is not a choice, but rather the reality of their upbringing has forced them into this mindset.

As a generation, Gen Z has grown up surrounded by technology such as smartphones, social media, climate change fears, economic instability, and rapid advancement of artificial intelligence; they have never known what it meant to grow up in a society where there weren’t school shootings reported in the news – the unfortunate reality of today’s world has been foisted upon them due to circumstances outside their control; this generation of young people has observed a pandemic cause disruption to how we live every day; we have left an economy and ecology for this generation that is worse than what we received it in; the consequence of an uncertain global environment is you must either become rigidly inflexible or learn to embrace multiple truths simultaneously.

Many in Gen Z have decided to embrace multiple truths.

In addition, for Gen Z, having shared values is not optional; they expect this same standard from their friends, employers, partners, and media sources – Gen Z will not tolerate disingenuous behaviours like older generations have done; they will not remain silent in order to maintain harmony; instead, they are establishing a higher quality standard for themselves and those around them.

What Open-Mindedness Actually Looks Like in 2026

In 2026, being Gen Z more open minded looks like a 23-year-old who speaks with her therapist bi-weekly and is not embarrassed when doing so. The way fashion looks right now does not give a care if you are wearing a skirt or pants regardless of gender. Fashion looks like Sabrina Carpenter and is openly sexual and goofy at the same and as a result, she’s being celebrated instead of punished.

Fashion looks like Chappell Roan this year and said no to fan requests for free appearances and the fans have respected them instead of belittling them because they were raised to respect people’s boundaries. Fashion looks like a generation who is demanding that the brands they purchase from do what they say they stand for.

Gen Z is removing the stigma on being vulnerable and instilling a culture of well-being within their institutions and they are expecting their institutions to follow their example, be it their workplace, their school, or the brands that they purchase from.

Is this generation perfect? No. They have their own blind spots, their own contradictions, their own mistakes. However, they are headed in a direction of: total honesty, total inclusion, total emotional and relational intelligence. The direction that they are headed is not insignificant, it is almost everything.
